IELTS technology vocabulary: connect claims and reasons

Connect IELTS technology vocabulary to specific effects and conditions. Use an original online consultation question to develop a reason and explain its limits.

Explain how a particular technology changes a specific activity. Identify the previous process, the step that changes and the people affected before discussing convenience and limitations. Technology makes life easier is too broad to explain a mechanism.

Explain the causal link

A remote service may reduce travel without being suitable for every problem. Describe how time is saved, then identify situations requiring a visit. This gives the claim a clear scope.

Choose expressions accurately

Reduce travel time concerns journeys; reliable internet access concerns connectivity; in-person appointments concern physical attendance. Select a verb matching the effect. Access, replace and improve describe different relationships rather than interchangeable benefits.

Practice question

Online consultations are becoming more common in public services. Discuss the benefits and limitations of providing services this way.

Illustrative paragraph

Online consultations can make routine services easier to reach for people living far from an office. They remove the need to travel simply to ask a question or discuss a document. This may save time for both visitors and staff. However, the advantage depends on reliable internet access and does not apply to tasks that require physical inspection.

Check your paragraph

Cover the illustrative paragraph and explain the purpose of each sentence in your own words. Then change one detail and rewrite it. Check that the claim still follows from the evidence. Do not just replace synonyms; if the meaning changes, revise the reason as well.
